- ROTARY STANDS UP FOR UKRAINE -FUNDRAISER FOR UKRAINE
ROTARY STANDS UP FOR UKRAINE -FUNDRAISER FOR UKRAINE -Sunday, September 29th 2PM-4PM (takeouts from 12:30-1:30) -IN OUR PARISH HALL. Tickets are $35. Advance sales only. No tickets will be sold at the door. Special guests include Ukrainian soldiers, Ukrainian entertainment, Ukrainian food and raffles. See Father Myron or Jean Pedley for details.
- Religious Education Registration:
Registration will be after each Sunday’s Liturgy (approximately at 10:30 A.M in the parish hall) on August 25, September 1 & 8, 2024. First day of class will be Sunday September 15, 2024 after 9:00 A.M. Divine Liturgy, from 10:30-11:30 A.M. Children are to attend liturgy prior to religious education. Parents, please remember: 2 years of religious education are required prior to receiving 1st Solemn Holy Communion. For more information, please contact Father Myron and/or Olenka Chandoha-Knott.

- Divine Liturgy back in the Church next Weekend
Divine Liturgy will return to the Church starting next weekend, September 7th & 8th. We hope everyone enjoyed Divine Liturgies in the air-conditioned Hall throughout the Summer. Special thanks to those who helped set-up the Hall for the Services.
- Collection for Church Repairs this Weekend
A reminder that Donations for Church repairs can be made this Weekend, August 31st & September 1st. Please use the specially marked envelope to make your contribution. Thank you to everyone for your generosity toward the upkeep of our buildings and property.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
- New Church Year begins this Sunday
The church liturgical year begins on September 1st. The establishment of the new church year has a long history dating back to ancient Roman times. The Church Fathers at the First Council of Nicaea (325 AD), out of gratitude for the legalization and ability to openly profess the Christian faith, adopted this date as the beginning of the new church/liturgical year. The Eastern Catholic Church continues this practice of starting the new church year on September 1st.
- Holy Day next Sunday
The Nativity of the Mother of God Holy Day is next Sunday, September 8th. Divine Liturgy will be held at the usual time of 9:00am. Everyone is encouraged to come to Church on this special Holy Day to Honor the Mother of God.
- Divine Liturgy requests being accepted
We are now accepting Divine Liturgy requests for the Fall. Liturgies are available Mondays through Saturdays. Please fill out a request form (pink sheet) located in the back of the Church and drop them into the collection basket or give them to Fr. Myron directly. This is your chance to honor a Loved One (Living or Deceased) by requesting a Divine Liturgy in their Honor.
- Car Show Fundraiser next Saturday in Olyphant
Ss. Cyril & Methodius Ukrainian Catholic Church in Olyphant will be hosting a CAR SHOW on Saturday, September 7th from 1:00 to 5:00. The Car Show will be open to all cars, trucks and motorcycles, with a registration fee of $10. All registrants will be eligible to win door prizes in addition to trophies being awarded to: “Father’s Choice”, “Kids’ Choice”, and “People’s Choice.” There is no fee to attend. We will be selling hot dogs, homemade wimpies, cookies, soft drinks and ice cream novelties. There will be a basket raffle, 50/50 raffle, Big 6 Wheel, and free balloons. Music will be provided by our own “DJ Paul.”

EPISTLE (2Cor 4:6-15)
Reading of the Second Epistle of St. Paul to the Corinthians.
Brethren: God who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to bring to light the knowledge of the glory of God on the face of [Jesus] Christ. But we hold this treasure in earthen vessels, that the surpassing power may be of God and not from us. We are afflicted in every way, but not constrained; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying about in the body the dying of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our body. For we who live are constantly being given up to death for the sake of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may be manifested in our mortal flesh. So death is at work in us, but life in you. Since, then, we have the same spirit of faith, according to what is written, “I believed, therefore I spoke,” we too believe and therefore speak, knowing that the one who raised the Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and place us with you in his presence. Everything indeed is for you, so that the grace bestowed in abundance on more and more people may cause the thanksgiving to overflow for the glory of God
Gospel (Mt 22,35-46)
At that time, a scholar of the law tested Jesus by asking, “Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” He said to him, “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.” While the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus questioned them, saying, “What is your opinion about the Messiah? Whose son is he?” They replied, “David’s.” He said to them, “How, then, does David, inspired by the Spirit, call him ‘lord,’ saying, ‘The Lord said to my lord, “Sit at my right hand until I place your enemies under your feet?”’ If David calls him ‘lord’, how can he be his son?” No one was able to answer him a word, nor from that day on did anyone dare to ask him any more questions.
Working in the Vineyard of Christ
Today’s Gospel is the parable of a vineyard owner who had prepared everything so that he might receive his share of the produce at vintage time. Working in the Vineyard of Christ” is a term often used when someone enters the Priesthood or religious life. But God has throughout the ages, in Old and New Testament times, sent people to work in the Vineyard, to work and live according to the Holy Will of God, Our Heavenly Father. In the parable, the owner of the vineyard sends tenants, workers, to take care of the vineyard so that in due time, when it’s harvest, to receive a share of the produce. The master, owner, sent servants to receive and bring to him. God has sent numerous servants throughout salvation history to prepare them to recognize and accept the Messiah Whom He sent in the fulness of time. However, due to their sinfulness and lacking the virtue of humble, dedicated service, they reject those chosen and sent by God and refuse to fulfill the Holy Will of God. At one point there is only one righteous man and his family left, Noah, whom Yahweh God instructed to build an ark as a safe haven before sending the flood. As the time drew nearer to send the Messiah, God sent the Prophets to call the people to conversion, to turn away from sin and turn back towards God. Conversion is a free, voluntary inner desire and act to change. The prophet spoke the divine, inspired Word of God. The people out of sinful pride and spiritual blindness reject the prophet and the message sent from God. Some they mistreat (beat). Some they stone. Some they kill. Our Heavenly Father, much like the owner of the vineyard, in the fulness of time, having prepared them for His coming, sends His Son. “They will respect My Son.” (v. 37) But they did not. The opponents of Our Lord connived and contrived, plotting to kill Him, crucify Him out of jealousy and envy. Jesus throughout His earthly life remained faithful to God. His self-giving, self-sacrificial act of Love on the Cross redeems all mankind from sin. The one rejected has become the cornerstone of the structure. This was the Heavenly Father’s divine plan of salvation for us all. Christ continues to be present with us, especially in the Sacred Mystery (Sacrament) of the Holy Eucharist. On the day Christ fulfilled His promise to send us another advocate, on Pentecost, the Church is born. We the members of the Mystical Body of Christ are constantly nourished through Word and Sacrament. We attentively listen to the readings of Sacred Scripture, especially the Epistle and Gospel. Also, we worthily receive the Body and Blood of Christ. We accept and reject Him not. This we do in preparation for the day when Our Lord deems us worthy to enter into His eternal Kingdom of Heaven.
