1. annual Texas Roadhouse Fundraiser

We are holding our annual Texas Roadhouse Fundraiser once again. Christmas gift cards are available in $5 increments ranging from $5 to $100. We receive 10% of all sales. Orders will be taken from Nov. 2nd through Dec. 1st. Order forms are located near bulletins. Please return to Daria by Sunday,  Dec. 1st. • Solemn Holy Day on Thursday

The Presentation of the Mother of God solemn Holy Day is this Thursday, November 21st.  Divine Liturgy will be held at 9:00am. According to the Sacred Tradition of the Church, when Mary was three years old, her pious parents, Joachim and Anna had brought their child Mary to the Holy Temple in Jerusalem.  At that time, the priest of the Old Testament who received the child Mary was Zachary, the father of St. John the Baptist.  Sacred tradition has it that the Blessed Virgin Mary stayed in the dedicated temple life until the age of fifteen.  Mary from an early age dedicated Her entire life to the service of the Lord God.  She prayed frequently and devoutly.  She had a sincere love for neighbor and loved poverty and shared with the poor, those in need.  She embodied the perfection of a virtuous life and became a shining example for others to follow.  Please come to Church on this Holy Day to honor the Mother of God.

• St. Vladimir’s Annual Autumn Dinner

Our annual Autumn Dinner will be held on Sunday, November 24th beginning at Noon in the Hall.  Homemade Meat Lasagna, Fresh Garden Salad, Bread, Dessert and Beverage.  Only $15 per person.  Pick up of take-outs between 11:00am and 11:45am only.  Dinner served at 12 Noon.  For reservations, call Maria at 570-503-1514.  Deadline is Monday, Nov. 18th.  There will also be Basket Raffles and a 50/50 Raffle!  We look forward to seeing you at this pre-holiday event, sharing a meal and fellowship with one another.  See you there!

Divine Liturgy will be 10:30 a.m. November 24, 2024 due to the Harvest Dinner.  Please mark your calendars.

We are in need of donations of raffle baskets and desserts for our upcoming dinner on Sunday, November 24th. If you can help, please drop items off to the hall on Saturday, November 23rd , 12 pm to 4pm. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

• Cold Medicine and Vitamin Drive for Ukraine

St. Vladimir’s will be collecting Adult Cold Medicine for Soldiers as well as Childrens Melatonin and Vitamins for Children in Ukraine.  These items are very much needed for the winter months.  You can drop off these items in the back of the Church.  Thank you to everyone for your support.

• TOYS FOR TOTS AT ST. VLADIMIR’S

Our parish has been approved as an official Toys for Tots drop off site!  Starting next Saturday, November 23, 2024, there will be two places for you to drop off new unwrapped toys for children in the area.  One will be located in the church hall and the other in the vestibule.  The toy drive will run until December 12, 2024.  For any additional information please contact Maria Ruane 570-877-5899

• EOTC CHILDREN’S BOOK DRIVE

Our neighbours at the EOTC will be holding their annual Christmas book drive through December.  They are in need of new/gently used children’s books from birth through young adult.  There will be a drop box starting next Saturday, November 23, 2024 in the church vestibule.

• ST. Francis of Assisi SOUP KITCHEN COLLECTION

There will be a drop box starting next Saturday, November 23, 2024, in the church vestibule for canned and boxed foods for St. Francis of Assisi soup kitchen in Scranton.  They are in big need of canned vegetables of all kinds and pasta, mainly rotini, penne, and rigatoni. This will run until December 19, 2024.

Holy Transfiguration Ukrainian Catholic Church, 240 Center St in Nanticoke will be holding a Christmas Flea Market on Saturday, Nov. 23rd, Saturday, Nov. 30th, and Saturday, Dec. 7th from 9am to 2pm.  Ukrainian Basket Raffle.  Eat-in Ethnic Foods will be available.  Pyrohy for Sale.  Potato Pancakes.  Christmas Ornaments, Christmas Trees, Nativity sets and a variety of Christmas Decor.  Also, great variety of Flea Market items and Furniture.  Great prices!  Great food!

1. Commemoration of Ukrainian Holodomor next Saturday in NYC

Commemoration of the Ukrainian Holodomor-Genocide of 1932-1933 will be held next Saturday, November 23rd, at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City, at 1:00pm.  A Requiem Service sung by the Ukrainian chorus Dumka of New York will take place.  We must never forget the millions of innocent victims of Ukraine’s Genocide of 1932-1933.

1. Philip’s Fast/Nativity FAST

The Nativity Fast is a 40-day period of fasting, prayer, and reflection that begins on November 15 and ends on December 24.   The Nativity Fast is a time to prepare for the birth of Christ and to contemplate the significance of his coming. The fast is also known as Philip’s Fast. Focus is on Fasting, Prayer, Reading, Confession, Church attendance, Almsgiving.  The Nativity Fast is a time to reflect on the role of Mary’s obedience to God and to contemplate the love God has for us.

1. ROTARY STANDS UP FOR UKRAINE -FUNDRAISER FOR UKRAINE

ROTARY STANDS UP FOR UKRAINE -FUNDRAISER FOR UKRAINE -Sunday, September 29th 2PM-4PM (takeouts from 12:30-1:30) -IN OUR PARISH HALL.  Tickets are $35. Advance sales only. No tickets will be sold at the door. Special guests include Ukrainian soldiers, Ukrainian entertainment, Ukrainian food and raffles.  See Father Myron or Jean Pedley for details.

• Religious Education Registration:

Registration will be after each Sunday’s Liturgy (approximately at 10:30 A.M in the parish hall) on August 25, September 1 & 8, 2024.  First day of class will be Sunday September 15, 2024 after 9:00 A.M. Divine Liturgy, from 10:30-11:30 A.M.  Children are to attend liturgy prior to religious education.  Parents, please remember:   2 years of religious education are required prior to receiving 1st Solemn Holy Communion.    For more information, please contact Father Myron and/or Olenka Chandoha-Knott.

The Nativity of the Mother of God Holy Day is this Sunday, September 8th.  Divine Liturgy will be held at the usual time of 9:00am.  Everyone is encouraged to come to Church on this special Holy Day to Honor the Mother of God.

• Solemn Holy Day next Saturday

The Exaltation of the Holy Cross solemn Holy Day is next Saturday, September 14th.  Divine Liturgy will be held at the usual time of 4:00pm.  Everyone is encouraged to attend this Holy Day Liturgy.

• Exaltation of the Holy Cross

As well as celebrating the sacrifice of Jesus on the Cross, the feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross commemorates two historical events. The first is the discovery in 320 AD of the True Cross, of Calvary and of the tomb of Christ by St. Helena, the mother of Emperor Constantine, which the Romans had buried under a Temple to Venus. The second is the dedication of a church on the site in 335 AD. Today this church, in continuous existence since then, is known as the Basilica of the Holy Sepulcher, and houses Calvary, the Tomb of Jesus and the cistern in which St. Helena found the instruments of the Passion, including the Cross.

We are now accepting Divine Liturgy requests for the Fall. Liturgies are available Mondays through Saturdays.  Please fill out a request form (pink sheet) located in the back of the Church and drop them into the collection basket or give them to Fr. Myron directly.  This is your chance to honor a Loved One (Living or Deceased) by requesting a Divine Liturgy in their Name.

1. Outdoor Flea Market next Saturday in Phoenixville

Ss. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church in Phoenixville is hosting an Outdoor Flea Market next Saturday, September 14th, from 10:00am-2:00pm.  There will also be an indoor Gift Basket Raffle.  The Church is located at 301 Fairview St.

NATIVITY OF THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

“By Your birth, O Immaculate One, Joachim and Anna were freed from the reproaches of childlessness, and Adam and Eve from the corruption of death. And Your people redeemed from the guilt of their sins, celebrate as they cry out to You: “The barren one gives birth to the Mother of God and nourisher of our life.” -Kontakion, tone 4.  The Feast of the Nativity of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary is one of the great feasts or holy days dedicated to Mary, the Mother of God. The Feast of Her birth or Nativity is celebrated on September 8th, near the start of the new liturgical year. Her Feast of the Dormition or Falling Asleep is celebrated on August 15th, near the end of the liturgical year.  Mary’s parents were childless, without children, for many heard their plea and answered their prayers with the birth of Mary.  It was a time of great rejoicing. For all life, the birth of a child, was considered a blessing from God.  Mary’s Birth was the beginning of the fulfillment of the promise made by Yahweh God after the fall of Adam and Eve. To the snake, the devil, the Lord said: “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; They will strike at your head, while you strike at their heel.” (Genesis 3:15)  We joyously celebrate this Marian feast for God’s plan for salvation is being fulfilled. The child Mary would develop and grow in faith. Mary would accept the news of the Annunciation. Mary would respond “Yes” to the call of God given by Archangel Gabriel to give birth to the long-awaited Messiah, Redeemer of the world of whom the Old Testament prophets foretold. Sacred Scripture gives no record of Mary’s birth. The Protoevangelium of James (Apocrypha) makes mention of the birth. The early church celebrated the feast starting in the East already by the sixth century and was to be celebrated on September 8th, near the beginning of the new church year. St. Augustine from the church in the West speaks of Mary as “the flower of the field from whom bloomed the precious lily of the valley. Through her birth the nature inherited from our first parents is changed.”  The kontakion for the Feast speaks of the barren Anna giving birth. Joakim and Anna were freed from the reproach of childlessness. Giving birth to children was considered to be a blessing from God.  Adam and Eve were freed from the corruption of death. The faithful, the believers in Christ are redeemed from the guilt of sin, The celebration of the Nativity of Mary Who was to one day become the mother of Christ Jesus, the Savior of the world.

Troparion: By Your cross You destroyed death; You opened Paradise to the thief; You changed the lamentation of the myrrhbearers to joy, and charged the apostles to proclaim that You are risen, O Christ our God, offering great mercy to the world.

Troparion: Your nativity, O Mother of God, has made joy known to all the world, for from you dawned the Sun of Righteousness, Christ our God. He abolished the curse and gave the blessing; and by making death of no effect He bestowed on us eternal life.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.

Kontakion: No longer shall the dominion of death be able to hold humanity, for Christ went down shattering and destroying its powers. Hades is bound. The prophets exult with one voice: The Savior has come for those with faith, saying: Come forth, O faithful, to the resurrection!

Now and for ever and ever: Amen.

O my soul, magnify the Virgin Mary born from a barren womb. Virginity is alien to mothers and childbearing is foreign to virgins, yet in you, O Mother of God, both of them came together. Therefore, we and all the nations of the earth without ceasing magnify you.

Brethren:

See with what large letters I am writing to you in my own hand! It is those who want to make a good appearance in the flesh who are trying to compel you to have yourselves circumcised, only that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. Not even those having themselves circumcised observe the law themselves; they only want you to be circumcised so that they may boast of your flesh. But may I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. For neither does circumcision mean anything, nor does uncircumcision, but only a new creation. Peace and mercy be to all who follow this rule and to the Israel of God. From now on, let no one make troubles for me; for I bear the marks of Jesus on my body. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brothers. Amen.

Gospel: (Jn 3,13-17)

     The Lord said, “No one has gone up to heaven except the one who has come down from heaven, the Son of Man. And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life. For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life.
