THE EXALTATION OF THE HOLY, PRECIOUS, AND LIFE-GIVING CROSS
____________________________________________
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him might not perish but might have eternal life.” (John 3:16)
God is Love. His love for us is infinite, limitless. Without measure. In the fulness of time, God sends His Only Begotten Son into the world to redeem us, save us. How did Jesus do this? By His passion, death, and resurrection. The crucifixion was the greatest act of injustice done to One Who was and is totally innocent. During the Divine Liturgy on weekdays, we pray the First Antiphon: The Lord our God is righteous; in Him there is no wrong. Jesus, the Son of God, took upon Himself the sin of the world, although He Himself was sinless. Jesus bore the shame of the cross. For crucifixion was reserved as punishment for the most heinous of sins, crimes. Jesus our Lord endured this to rescue us from the bonds of the evil one. By His death on the Cross, He conquered death by death. His rising from the dead on the third day, His resurrection is a pledge, a promise of our own resurrection, if we but remain faithful to Christ and His gospel message of absolute Love and Truth. Having opened the gates to Heaven, Christ descended into Hades, the waiting place where the righteous would wait for the Messiah to come and make reparation for sin. In the Icon of the Descent into Hades, Christ extends His hands to Adam and Eve. This gesture symbolizes the victory of the Risen Christ over the powers of sin, death, and evil. The offer to salvation is extended to all. We baptized Christians have been designated as heirs to the Kingdom of Heaven. We shall inherit eternal life if we take up our cross and follow in the footsteps of Christ. For the Christian, the Cross is a sign of Victory and thus we live in the hope of our own resurrection. We have the blessed assurance that the Lord God truly loves us and wants us to be deemed worthy of His eternal kingdom of Heaven. On Wednesdays and Fridays throughout the year, we sing or recite the troparion, a hymn commemorating the victory of the Cross of Christ: “Save Your people, O Lord, and bless Your inheritance, grant victory to Your faithful people against enemies, and protect Your people by Your Cross.” May our long-suffering brothers and sisters in Christ, especially in Ukraine, find some solace knowing that after the cross comes the resurrection. The Lord God shall come again to judge all nations, all people, the living and the dead. On that glorious day, all wrongs will be made right and there will be Justice, swift and complete. – Father D. George Worschak
SUNDAY AFTER THE EXALTATION OF THE HOLY CROSS
First Antiphon, from the Feast of the Exaltation
O God, my God, hear me; why have you forsaken me? The words of my transgressions put salvation far from me.
Through the prayers of the Mother of God, O Savior, save us!
O God, I will call to You by day, but You will not listen; and by night, yet it will not be foolish of me.
Through the prayers of the Mother of God, O Savior, save us!
But You, the praise of Israel, dwell in the holy place.
Through the prayers of the Mother of God, O Savior, save us!
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit, now and forever and ever. Amen.
Only begotten Son . . . .
Third Antiphon, from Sunday and the Feast of the Exaltation
Come, let us sing joyfully to the Lord, let us acclaim God, our Savior. Son of God, crucified in the flesh, save us who sing to You: Alleluia!
Let us come before His face with praise, and acclaim Him in psalms. Son of God, crucified in the flesh, save us who sing to You: Alleluia!
For God is the great Lord, and the great king over all the earth. Son of God, crucified in the flesh, save us who sing to You: Alleluia!
Priest: Wisdom! Stand aright!
People: Come, let us worship and fall down before Christ. Son of God, crucified in the flesh, save us who sing to You: Alleluia!
Tropar of the Resurrection, tone 8 — You came down from on high, O Merciful One, and accepted three days of burial to free us from our sufferings. O Lord, our life and our resurrection, glory be to You!
Tropar of the Cross, tone 1 — Save Your people, O Lord, and bless Your inheritance. Grant victory to Your faithful people against enemies, and protect Your community by Your cross.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
Kondak of the Resurrection, tone 7 —When You rose from the tomb, You also raised the dead and resurrected Adam. Eve exults in Your resurrection, and the ends of the world celebrate Your rising from the dead, O most merciful One.
Now and forever and ever. Amen.
Kondak of the Cross, tone 4 — By Your own choice, O Christ our God, You were lifted on the cross. Grant Your mercies to Your new community that bears Your name. By Your power, gladden the faithful people, and grant them victory against enemies. May they have the help of Your instrument of peace, the invincible sign of victory.
“HOLY GOD” is sung as usual.
Prokimen of the Cross, tone 7
Exalt the Lord our God, and bow in worship at the footstool of His feet, for it is holy.
verse: The Lord reigns, let the peoples tremble.
Exalt the Lord our God, and bow in worship at the footstool of His feet, for it is holy.
Alleluia verses of the Sunday after the Exaltation
Remember Your congregation, which You acquired from the beginning.
But God is our king before the ages; He has wrought salvation in the midst of the earth.
Hymn to the Mother of God (instead of “It is truly right . . .”
O my soul, magnify the most precious Cross of the Lord.
You are a mystical Paradise, O Mother of God, who though untilled, have brought forth Christ. He has planted upon earth the life-giving Tree of the Cross. Therefore today, as we raise it on high, we bow low and we magnify you.
Communion Verse of Sunday, and of the Cross
Let the light of Your countenance, O Lord, shine upon us.
Praise the Lord from the heavens; praise Him in the highest!
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
EPISTLE – Galatians 2:16-20
“A reading from the Epistle of the holy apostle paul, to the GALATians”
Brethren, we know that a person is justified not by the works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ. And we have come to believe in Christ Jesus, so that we might be justified by faith in Christ, and not by doing the works of the law, because no one will be justified by the works of the law.
But if, in our effort to be justified in Christ, we ourselves have been found to be sinners, is Christ then a servant of sin? Certainly not!
But if I build up again the very things that I once tore down, then I demonstrate that I am a transgressor.
For through the law I died to the law, so that I might live to God. I have been crucified with Christ;
and it is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me.
And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
GOSPEL – Mark 8:34—9:1
AT THAT TIME, Jesus called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it; and whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it.
For what does it profit a man, to gain the whole world and forfeit his life?
For what can a man give in return for his life? For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of man also be ashamed, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.” And he said to them, “Truly, I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see that the kingdom of God has come with power.”
BENEATH THE CROSS I STAY
(Peed Khrest Tviy Stayu)
Beneath the Cross I stay, to mourn, to weep, to grieve, to pray.
(repeat) O Christ crucified, Who, in torment died, for sin-ins of the world.
You sacrificed for me, by dying on the sacred tree.
(repeat) For my sins I plead, Jesus, You I need. Cleanse me-e of my sins.
O Jesus, You are mine, Savior and God of all, Divine.
(repeat) How I pray to Thee: Jesus come to me, and save my sinful soul.

NATIVITY OF THE MOST BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
“By Your birth, O Immaculate One, Joachim and Anna were freed from the reproaches of childlessness, and Adam and Eve from the corruption of death. And Your people redeemed from the guilt of their sins, celebrate as they cry out to You: “The barren one gives birth to the Mother of God and nourisher of our life.” -Kontakion, tone 4. The Feast of the Nativity of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary is one of the great feasts or holy days dedicated to Mary, the Mother of God. The Feast of Her birth or Nativity is celebrated on September 8th, near the start of the new liturgical year. Her Feast of the Dormition or Falling Asleep is celebrated on August 15th, near the end of the liturgical year. Mary’s parents were childless, without children, for many heard their plea and answered their prayers with the birth of Mary. It was a time of great rejoicing. For all life, the birth of a child, was considered a blessing from God. Mary’s Birth was the beginning of the fulfillment of the promise made by Yahweh God after the fall of Adam and Eve. To the snake, the devil, the Lord said: “I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; They will strike at your head, while you strike at their heel.” (Genesis 3:15) We joyously celebrate this Marian feast for God’s plan for salvation is being fulfilled. The child Mary would develop and grow in faith. Mary would accept the news of the Annunciation. Mary would respond “Yes” to the call of God given by Archangel Gabriel to give birth to the long-awaited Messiah, Redeemer of the world of whom the Old Testament prophets foretold. Sacred Scripture gives no record of Mary’s birth. The Protoevangelium of James (Apocrypha) makes mention of the birth. The early church celebrated the feast starting in the East already by the sixth century and was to be celebrated on September 8th, near the beginning of the new church year. St. Augustine from the church in the West speaks of Mary as “the flower of the field from whom bloomed the precious lily of the valley. Through her birth the nature inherited from our first parents is changed.” The kontakion for the Feast speaks of the barren Anna giving birth. Joakim and Anna were freed from the reproach of childlessness. Giving birth to children was considered to be a blessing from God. Adam and Eve were freed from the corruption of death. The faithful, the believers in Christ are redeemed from the guilt of sin, The celebration of the Nativity of Mary Who was to one day become the mother of Christ Jesus, the Savior of the world.
Father D. George Worschak
SUNDAY BEFORE THE EXALTATION OF THE HOLY CROSS
POSTFEAST NATIVITY OF THE MOTHER OF GOD
Troparion: By Your cross You destroyed death; You opened Paradise to the thief; You changed the lamentation of the myrrhbearers to joy, and charged the apostles to proclaim that You are risen, O Christ our God, offering great mercy to the world.
Troparion: Your nativity, O Mother of God, has made joy known to all the world, for from you dawned the Sun of Righteousness, Christ our God. He abolished the curse and gave the blessing; and by making death of no effect He bestowed on us eternal life.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit.
Kontakion: No longer shall the dominion of death be able to hold humanity, for Christ went down shattering and destroying its powers. Hades is bound. The prophets exult with one voice: The Savior has come for those with faith, saying: Come forth, O faithful, to the resurrection!
Now and for ever and ever: Amen.
Kontakion: By your birth, O immaculate one, Joachim and Anna were freed from the reproach of childlessness, and Adam and Eve from the corruption of death. And your people, redeemed from the guilt of their sins, celebrate as they cry out to you: The barren one gives birth to the Mother of God and nourisher of our life.
Prokimenon: Save Your people, O Lord, and bless Your inheritance.
Verse: Unto you I will cry, O Lord, lest you turn from me in silence.
Prokimenon: Because He has regarded the humility of His handmaid; for, behold, all generations shall call me blessed.
Alleluia Verses: I have exalted one chosen from the people; and with My holy oil, I have anointed him.
Indeed, My hand shall sustain him, and My arm shall make him strong.
Instead of page 151 “It is truly right”.…
O my soul, magnify the Virgin Mary born from a barren womb. Virginity is alien to mothers and childbearing is foreign to virgins, yet in you, O Mother of God, both of them came together. Therefore, we and all the nations of the earth without ceasing magnify you.
Communion Verse: Praise the Lord from the heavens; praise Him in the highest.
I will take the chalice of salvation, and I will call upon the Lord. Alleluia(3X)
Epistle (Gal 6,11-18)
A reading from the Epistle of the Holy Apostle Paul to the Galatians:
Brethren:
See with what large letters I am writing to you in my own hand! It is those who want to make a good appearance in the flesh who are trying to compel you to have yourselves circumcised, only that they may not be persecuted for the cross of Christ. Not even those having themselves circumcised observe the law themselves; they only want you to be circumcised so that they may boast of your flesh. But may I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. For neither does circumcision mean anything, nor does uncircumcision, but only a new creation. Peace and mercy be to all who follow this rule and to the Israel of God. From now on, let no one make troubles for me; for I bear the marks of Jesus on my body. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit, brothers. Amen.
Gospel: (Jn 3,13-17)
The Lord said, “No one has gone up to heaven except the one who has come down from heaven, the Son of Man. And just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life. For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him.”
