St. Nicholas VISIT

St. Nicholas will be coming to our parish on Sunday, December 10, 2023 after liturgy. Children from religious education will have a Christmas presentation for our parish and will eagerly await the arrival of St. Nicholas. A luncheon will be provided. A basket raffle will also be available for parishioners and guests to purchase. All are welcome to attend this Christmas tradition!

DECEMBER PYROHY SALE

The season of Christmas is fast approaching and our pyrohy orders are filling up fast! Our next sale and distribution is scheduled for Saturday December 16th from 2:30 PM until 3:45 PM and Sunday December 17th from 9:30 AM until 11 AM and after Liturgy on both days. Orders are taken on a first call/first served basis and supply is limited don’t be disappointed! Call Leslie today!!! 570-342-3749

REACH OUT TO OUR NEIGHBORS ACROSS THE STREET THIS CHRISTMAS!!!!

Lackawanna County Office of Youth & Family Services provides programs for children in our county. Outreach – Center for Community Resources (our neighbors across the street) provides children involved in those programs with books, pajamas, and educational toys each year. Lackawanna County Office of Youth & Family Services provide these items to over 250 children and are still looking for additional support. We are in need of pajamas sizes 2T – 10 for boys and girls; toys and games for infants through 6 years old, and books for children 0 – 10. If you would like to donate, we will have a contribution box in the back of the church for you to drop off these items. New items please, no used items and do not gift wrap. Use the above list to make your purchases. Thank you for your support. The items will be collected through December 20th. See Jean Pedley if you have any questions.

Potato Peeling on Wednesday

The peeling of potatoes for the making of Pyrohy will take place this Wednesday, December 13th, beginning at 9:30am. Workers are needed to help with this important task. Thank you to those who are able to come and help.

Concert of Sacred Music this Sunday in Philadelphia

St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, 24th and Poplar Sts, Philadelphia is holding a Concert of Sacred Music from East to West this Sunday, December 10th at 4:00pm. In celebration of the Church’s 80th Anniversary. Featuring music by Bortniansky, Hurko, Pitoni, Distler, Palestrina, Zakkak and Lysenko. Tickets $15.

Christmas Concert next Saturday in Phoenixville

Ss. Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church, 301 Fairview St, Phoenixville, will hold a Classic Christmas Concert to benefit Ukraine next Saturday, December 16th from 6:00pm – 9:00pm. St. Nicholas Holy Day on Wednesday

The Feast of St. Nicholas is this Wednesday, December 6th. A Holy Day Divine Liturgy will be held at 9:00am. Come to Church on this special day to Honor this Holy Saint.

Feast of St. Nicholas

St. Nicholas was born in the year 270. His parents were devout Christians. After their death, Nicholas distributed his inherited wealth with the poor. He defended the Christian faith. St. Nicholas even to this day is known for his personality trait of gift-giving. Shortly after his death, the faithful venerated the saintly Bishop. Churches were built in his honor and many parents named their sons “Nicholas.” In the Eastern Churches, almost every Thursday at the Divine Liturgy we read a Tropar and Kondak dedicated to St. Nicholas and all the Apostles. The icon of St. Nicholas is often found on the Iconostasis. There he is depicted as an Eastern Bishop, wearing an Omophor and Mitre. Many of our parishes have a program near his Feast Day during which St. Nicholas visits the children and greets them and distributes fruit, candy and small gifts, while those attending sing a special hymn in honor of St. Nicholas praising him for loving and serving us. We ask the saintly Nicholas to always help us in our time of need.

Holy Day on Friday

The Conception by St. Anna of the Blessed Virgin Mary Holy Day is this Friday, December 8th. A special Divine Liturgy will take place at 9:00am. Please come to church on this Holy Day.

The Conception by St. Anna of the Blessed Virgin Mary

St. Joachim, having been publicly reproached in the temple, retired to the desert, and fasting forty days, he implored God for the blessing of a child. At the same time his wife, St. Anne, did the same at her home, saying: “O God of our Fathers, hear my prayer and bless me as You blessed the womb of Sarah, giving her a son, Isaac.” On the fortieth day, as Anne was praying in the garden, an Angel of the Lord appeared to her and said: “The Lord has heard your prayer and you shall conceive and bring forth a child, and your seed will be spoken of in all the world!” Anne replied: “As the Lord my God lives, if I beget a child, I will offer it as a gift to the Lord my God and it shall minister to Him in the holy place all the days of its life.” Just about the same time the Angel also appeared to Joachim in the desert and said: “Joachim, the Lord God has heard your prayer. Go home, therefore, for your wife Anne shall conceive.” As Joachim with his flock was returning home, Anne exclaimed: “Now I know that the Lord God has blessed us exceedingly!” On the following day they brought an offering of thanksgiving to God at the temple, saying: “Now we know that the Lord our God has been gracious unto us and has remitted all our sins.”

Troparion, Kontakion & Theotokion:

When You went down to death, O Life Immortal, You struck Hades dead with the blazing light of Your divinity. When You raised the dead from the nether world, all the powers of heaven cried out: “O Giver of life, Christ our God, glory to You!”

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.

You rose from the tomb, O almighty Savior; and Hades, seeing this wonder was stricken with fear and the dead arose. Creation saw and rejoiced with You and Adam exults. And the world, my Savior sings Your praises forever.

Now and forever and ever. Amen.

The tomb and death could not hold the Mother of God, unceasing in her intercession and unfailing hope of patronage, for As the Mother of Life she was transferred to life by Him Who had dwelt in her ever-virgin womb.

Prokeimenon:

The Lord is my strength and my song of praise, and He has become my salvation.

EPISTLE (Eph 6:10-17)

A reading from the Holy Apostle Paul to the Ephesians:

Brethren: Draw your strength from the Lord and from his mighty power. Put on the armor of God so that you may be able to stand firm against the tactics of the devil. For our struggle is not with flesh and blood but with the principalities, with the powers, with the world rulers of this present darkness, with the evil spirits in the heavens. Therefore, put on the armor of God, that you may be able to resist on the evil day and, having done everything, to hold your ground. So stand fast with your loins girded in truth, clothed with righteousness as a breastplate, and your feet shod in readiness for the gospel of peace. In all circumstances, hold faith as a shield, to quench all the flaming arrows of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

GOSPEL (Lk 18:18-27)

An official asked him this question, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus answered him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments, ‘You shall not commit adultery; you shall not kill; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness; honor your father and your mother.’” And he replied, “All of these I have observed from my youth.” When Jesus heard this he said to him, “There is still one thing left for you: sell all that you have and distribute it to the poor, and you will have a treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” But when he heard this he became quite sad, for he was very rich. Jesus looked at him [now sad] and said, “How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God! For it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” Those who heard this said, “Then who can be saved?” And he said, “What is impossible for human beings is possible for God.”

Holodomor-Genocide Remembrance

The month of November for Ukrainians, Ukrainians in the heart and people of good will is a time of honoring the victims of the Holodomor, the terrible and planned by the Stalinist-Soviet regime famine of Ukrainians in Central, Eastern and Southern Ukraine in 1932-1933. The forced and prolonged famine of millions of Ukrainians has led to the deaths of at least 10.5 million people. Honor the memory of all those who perished by lighting a candle or sponsoring a Divine Liturgy in their honor.

November Pyrohy Sale raises over $2,400!

St. Vladimir’s first Pyrohy Sale of the season was a big Success. Thanks to the hard work of parish volunteers, 372 dozen were made and sold. Income was $2,980, expenses were $565.26, for a profit of $2,414.74. Thank you to everyone who made and bought our delicious Pyrohy. The next Pyrohy Sale is scheduled for December 16th.

Texas Roadhouse Gift Card Fundraiser

Orders are being taken for gift cards between Nov. 4th and Nov. 26th. Available in $5 increments up to $100. Free appetizer voucher with each gift card. Harvest Dinner raises over $2,600!

Last week’s Roast Beef Harvest Dinner event was a big success for St. Vladimir’s Church. Thanks to our Kitchen Staff, a total of 121 Dinners were prepared and sold. Total income was $3,468, expenses were $779.95, for a profit of $2,688.05. Income included Raffle Baskets: $657, Ukraine Donations: $160, 50/50 Raffle: $135, and Bar Tips: $89. Thank you very much to those who cooked, baked, prepared, donated, sold, bought, ate and enjoyed the Dinners! Special Thanks to the Military Soldiers who inspired us with their presence.

Saint Philip’s Fast

This fast begins forty days before the Nativity of our Lord on November 15, the day after the feast of St. Philip (Nov. 14), and that is why it called Saint Philip’s Fast (or the Philippian Fast – Pilipiwka in Ukrainian). The Philippian Fast is a time to prepare us to receive Christ into the world and into our hearts. Compare it to “advent”, but we’ve already started the journey.

Solemn Holy Day on Tuesday

The Presentation of the Mother of God solemn Holy Day is this Tuesday, November 21st. Divine Liturgy will be held at 9:00am. According to the Sacred Tradition of the Church, when Mary was three years old, her pious parents, Joachim and Anna had brought their child Mary to the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. At that time, the priest of the Old Testament who received the child Mary was Zachary, the father of St. John the Baptist. Sacred tradition has it that the Blessed Virgin Mary stayed in the dedicated temple life until the age of fifteen. Mary from an early age dedicated Her entire life to the service of the Lord God. She prayed frequently and devoutly. She had a sincere love for neighbor and loved poverty and shared with the poor, those in need. She embodied the perfection of a virtuous life and became a shining example for others to follow. Please come to Church on this Holy Day to honor the Mother of God.

90th anniversary of Holodomor at the Holodomor Memorial, 1 Massachusetts Ave, Washington D.C. next Saturday, November 25th. Holodomor Awareness Day. Shine a Light on Holodomor. Believe in Ukraine’s Future. Moment of Silence, Choir Performance by the Ukrainian Catholic National Shrine of the Holy Family Choir, Candle Lighting.

St. Vladimir Church will be sponsoring it’s Autumn Harvest Roast Beef Dinner on SUNDAY. NOV. 12 in the parish center. This will be a sit down dinner with takeout option available. Holy Day on Wednesday

St. Michael the Archangel Holy Day is this Wednesday, November 8th. Divine Liturgy will be held at 9:00am. St. Michael the Archangel is the leader of all Angels and of the Army of God. He has four main responsibilities or offices, as we know from Scripture and Christian Tradition. The first is to combat Satan. The second is to escort the faithful to Heaven at their hour of death. The third is to be a Champion of all Christians, and the Church itself. And the fourth is to call men from life on Earth to their heavenly Judgement. Today, St. Michael is invoked for Protection, especially from lethal enemies. He is also the patron of soldiers, police and doctors. Please come to Church on this Holy Day to Honor this special Saint.

Some reminders of fundraising efforts:

1) potato peeling for pyrohy will be this Wednesday, November 1st at 9:30 AM.

2) Those wishing to help with the pyrohy making process – Thursday, November 2nd at 9AM. Remember, no pinchers or potato ball makers needed because of the machine, but we need people to carry trays to freezers and other tasks that are needed as we get used to the new process. Please be patient as we all get adjusted to this new process!!! Plus the potatoes and dough are still being made that day fresh! There will be NO PICKUPS of pyrohy orders on Thursday as they need to be frozen. Distribution will be on Saturdays as always.

3) All frozen pyrohy orders can be picked up Saturday, November 4th from 2:30 until 10 minutes before Liturgy. Also pick ups after both liturgies on Saturday and Sunday for a short period of time.

3) The harvest dinner on November 12th starts at 12:15. Take out orders must be picked up between 11 – 12. Thank you for coming at that time as this is a sit down dinner and it will be difficult for us to make up your “to go” order after the dinner starts. Please call for your reservations now. See bulletin for details. Reminder, we will have Ukrainian soldiers wounded in the war with us and there will be raffle baskets and 50-50 to purchase. Plenty of time after Divine Liturgy to browse!

Rummage Sale continues this Sunday in Plymouth

The Women’s Society of SS Peter & Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church, 20 Nottingham St. Plymouth, PA will sponsor their annual Rummage Sale in the Church Hall – Sunday, October 22 – 12:00 noon to 2:00 PM. There are a lot of fine items for your shopping. A variety of homemade soup and halushki will be available for take outs only. Both the soups and the halushki are $8.00 a quart and $4.00 a pint. A Basket Raffle will also be presented and the proceeds from the Raffle will be donated to Humanitarian Aid in Ukraine. Come shop and enjoy. A Piggie take out will be available at this sale.

Ukrainian Army reveals Ukraine’s Strong Spirit

We remember the noble goal which is worth living for and sacrificing our lives for. This goal is an independent Ukrainian state in the family of European nations of high civilization and culture. These words were spoken by the Father and Head of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, His Beatitude Sviatoslav, in his greeting speech on the occasion of the Feast of the Protection of the Mother of God and the Day of Defenders of Ukraine. Christian Ukraine celebrates the Protection of the Blessed Virgin Mary for the first time on October 1. “Today, we celebrate the Day of Defenders of Ukraine. Historically, our Ukrainian army has been the army of those who protect and secure the life and development of the Ukrainian people. They are the ones who fight for Ukraine’s dignity and freedom. Therefore, on this day, our gratitude and greetings go to our men and women at the front who are protecting the future of Ukraine at the cost of their own lives,” said the Head of the Church. Three words come to mind today. The first is memory. “We remember,” the spiritual leader reminds us, “all our predecessors, entire epochs, generations of the national liberation struggle of Ukraine for its freedom and independence. We remember all those who fell in an unequal battle with the Russian aggressor. Today, we pray for them from the earth to the heavens, from the human heart to the throne of God.” The second word is fraternity. “We win only when we can rely on the shoulder of a comrade-in-arms, on the strength and courage of the Ukrainian army. It is the brotherhood of those at the front and those who live and work for the front. This national solidarity and unity in the struggle is the key to our victory. This brotherhood is like a cry forged in the furnace of our struggle for freedom,” His Beatitude Sviatoslav urges us to reflect. The third word is vocation. “The Lord God is calling our soldiers forward to defend the space of life and to remain human even in inhuman circumstances. The Ukrainian army today is called to conquer death with life, to bring light where there is darkness,” said the Head of the Church. According to him, we are now called to bring the space of freedom to where the Russian invader seeks to bring oppression and slavery. “Once again, we express our gratitude to the Ukrainian soldiers for showing the whole world what Ukraine is capable of — demonstrating that we are invincible and strong in spirit. The strength of spirit and will of the Ukrainian soldier now amazes the world,” the Primate emphasized.

Prayer For Peace in Ukraine

Heavenly Father, You Son taught us “Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the sons of God.” We fervently pray in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, that you inspire men to become peacemakers. May mankind seek reconciliation and peace as is Your Will in this world. May tranquility be restored to all nations and especially Ukraine. God, Our Father, we beseech You to comfort the suffering, heal the wounded, and accept the souls of the dearly departed into Your heavenly kingdom. May the Most Holy Mother of God extend Her Mantle of Protection over Ukraine and the whole world. May each of us always live our lives as instruments of Your peace, in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

The Church has long designated the month of October as a month of prayer and reflection on the precious gift of life that we as children of God share. Life is a gift from God the Creator of all things visible and invisible. We all are precious in the eyes of the Lord God. All human life is sacred and precious. Let each of our voices be heard by speaking up and on behalf of those who are unable to do so for themselves. Let us defend our right to life, unhindered by others and in accord with the Holy Will of Our Heavenly Father.

Halloween Food Truck Festival this weekend in Olyphant

Ss. Cyril & Methodius Ukrainian Catholic Church in Olyphant will hold a Food Truck Festival fundraiser this Saturday, October 14th and Sunday, October 15th. It will have a Halloween theme, with new games for kids of all ages. Bake Sale, Basket Raffle, Pizza Stand, Big 6 Wheel.

Tricky Tray this weekend in West Easton

Holy Ghost Ukrainian Catholic Church in West Easton will be holding their annual tricky tray this weekend, October 14th and 15th. It will be in the church hall. Sunday October 15th, 12 to 4pm. 4:30 pm closed drawing which will be live streamed on Facebook. No Admission charge. Over $18,000 in Prizes. Homemade ethnic food, Pyrohy, Halushki, Sesami Noodles and more! The Church is located at 315 Fourth St. in West Easton.

Soup and Hoagie Sale Thursday in Glen Lyon

St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, Glen Lyon, will be holding a Turkey, Ham & Cheese and Italian Hoagie Sale on Thursday, October 19th from 11:00am to 4;00pm. The cost of each hoagie is $8.00, and a quart of vegetable soup is $8.00. Orders can be placed by calling Debbie at 570-736-6908 by Sunday, October 15. Revived Soldiers Ukraine Charity Event next Saturday

St. Anne Ukrainian Catholic Church, 1545 Easton Road, Warrington, PA will host Revived Soldiers Ukraine Charity Event next Saturday, October 21st. Special Guests: Wounded Ukrainian Defenders brought by Revived Soldiers Ukraine for rehabilitation. Tickets: $10 kids 1:00pm-2:30pm. $15 adults 2:30pm-5:00pm.
