Metropolitan Borys visits Capitol Hill

________________________________

On Thursday, September 28th, Metropolitan Borys Gudziak together with the Razom Advocacy team, visited Capitol Hill to talk to Congressional leaders about the need to pass swift and decisive guarantees regarding aid to Ukraine.  The Archbishop met with Congressmen Tim Burchett representing the 2nd District of Tennessee, Neal Dunn serving as the U.S. representative for Florida’s 2nd congressional district, Joe Wilson, the U.S. representative for South Carolina’s 2nd congressional district and Chair of the Helsinki Commission, Gus Bilirakis who serves Florida’s 12th District, and Gregory Meeks from New York’s 5th Congressional District who is the ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.  Archbishop Borys held a meeting with Reverend Admiral Margaret Grun Kibben, chaplain of the U.S. House of Representatives. In February she visited Ukraine together with a small group of House GOP members. Each Wednesday Chaplain Kibben dedicates prayers in the House of Representatives to Ukraine.  “Our American political system with all its weaknesses evident in these days has many overriding virtues. Our Congress is open to the people. Members of our legislative bodies know that they must listen to citizens. We have the opportunity and responsibility to make our voices heard. I encourage all Americans to go see your representatives. The doors are open. They receive us courteously. In one day, it was possible to speak with several members and their staff. Some members are big friends of Ukraine, and others have voted against bills supporting Ukraine,” noted Metropolitan Borys Gudziak. “We thanked those who support our people and sought to help the others understand why they should do the same. Some of those whom we met were clearly swayed by the information we provided.”  The Metropolitan stressed that the work of the Ukrainian community representatives –the Ukrainian Congress Committee of America and Razom’s advocacy team – is essential. “I encourage all Ukrainians to write to or visit their senators or representatives. Thank them for their support and encourage those who do not fully support Ukraine to change their position,” emphasized the Archbishop who serves on the Razom Advocacy Advisory Board.

PLEASE PRAY FOR

Please include in your prayers those members of our parish who are in hospitals, care homes, rehabilitation facilities & those who are not able to join us actively in our church community.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • Clergy Retreat in New Jersey

Fr. Myron and the clergy of the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia participated in the annual Clergy Retreat, which was held at San Alfonso Retreat House in Long Branch, New Jersey. Nearly all priests in the active ministry attended. This year’s retreat Director was Mitred Protopresbyter Mark Morozowich, a Ukrainian Catholic priest from the Eparchy of St. Josaphat in Parma, Ohio. He is a Western Pennsylvania native. He grew up in the Pittsburgh area. Rev. Mitred Archpriest Mark has written articles on numerous topics, such as the Divine Liturgy and the Ukrainian Catholic Church in America, East meets West in Liturgy, and Eastern Catholic Infant Communion. He has also given lectures on such topics as the Council of Zamosc, the Presanctified Liturgy, Made in His Image and Likeness: Worship and Icons. And the Sacraments of Initiation in the Ukrainian Catholic Church.  After sharing supper together, the clergy were welcomed by Archbishop Borys Gudziak. Archbishop Borys introduced this year’s retreat master and briefly shared some of the recent events happening in Ukraine and in the Vatican. Pope Francis met with 45 Ukrainian Catholic bishops earlier this month. They shared some thoughts and open dialogue regarding the current situation in Ukraine and its effect on our Church there and throughout the Diaspora. Father Mark’s talks concentrated on us priests becoming “other Christ.” He spoke of the need to develop a close personal relationship with Our Lord God and Savior. Also, priests need to daily reflect and meditate on the Scriptural readings for the day, namely the Epistle and Gospel. Also, having received Christ in the reception of the Holy Eucharist, we are to put the prayers from the Liturgy into practice. Faith needs to be shown in active works, especially for our less fortunate faithful. It is utmost in providing pastoral ministry to them. The priest and all the faithful have been created in the image and likeness of God. We all are called to serve the Lord God in humility and great faith, especially in times of trials and tribulations. Both Archbishop Borys and the Retreat Master had reminded us to constantly pray daily for peace in Ukraine and to offer our help to those who had been wounded in the ongoing war in Ukraine. We should have a special sensitivity and compassion to those who now may have become our parishioners. The hope and prayer are that the clergy, having been renewed in spirit, may return to their parishes and assigned work with a new zeal to serve God and the People of God.

PLEASE PRAY FOR

Please include in your prayers those members of our parish who are in hospitals, care homes, rehabilitation facilities & those who are not able to join us actively in our church community.

On the night of September 19, 2023, Russian troops hit an industrial enterprise in Lviv, where the warehouse of humanitarian aid Caritas-Space Ukraine was located. The mission staff were not hurt, but the warehouse with everything inside burned to the ground.  33 pallets of food kits, 10 pallets of hygiene kits and cans, 10 pallets with generators and clothing have been destroyed. According to the representatives of the Lviv archeparchy, in which there is a warehouse, about 300 tons of humanitarian trucks burned in the warehouse. Vehicles with humanitarian cargo were rescued from the warehouse.  This is not the first case that the Russian Federation has attacked humanitarian warehouses in Ukraine. Counting all attacks on humanitarian warehouses is difficult because of confidentiality of information, but according to media reports, in May this year, warehouses of two humanitarian organizations in Odessa and Ternopil were destroyed. Caritas-Space Ukraine is monitoring the situation and will keep its partners updated.

Prayer For Peace in Ukraine

Heavenly Father, You Son taught us “Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called the sons of God.” We fervently pray in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, that you inspire men to become peacemakers. May mankind seek reconciliation and peace as is Your Will in this world. May tranquility be restored to all nations and especially Ukraine. God, Our Father, we beseech You to comfort the suffering, heal the wounded, and accept the souls of the dearly departed into Your heavenly kingdom. May the Most Holy Mother of God extend Her Mantle of Protection over Ukraine and the whole world. May each of us always live our lives as instruments of Your peace, in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

The second is the dedication of a church on the site in 335 AD.

Amen.

  • Ukrainian Bishops Divine Liturgy at St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome

On Sunday, September 10, at 1:30 PM Rome time, the Hierarchical Divine Liturgy will be held at St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, led by His Beatitude Sviatoslav in concelebration with the bishops of the Synod of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. With the joint service, the UGCC bishops from around the world will wrap up the work of the Synod, which will take place in Rome this year from September 3 to 13 and mark the 400th anniversary of the martyrdom of St. Josaphat.  “For the bishops, clergy, monastics, and faithful of our Church to pray in St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome is a special gift from God and a sign that, united in the community of the Universal Church, we are not alone in the terrible trials of war that have befallen our people. In this anniversary year of the martyrdom of our St. Josaphat, whose relics rest in this basilica, we want to ask God for a just peace for our country and to testify to the whole world the Christian values of freedom, for which we are ready to give our lives,” said His Beatitude Sviatoslav in a commentary to the Information Department of the UGCC.  In this regard, His Beatitude Sviatoslav calls on the faithful of the UGCC in Ukraine and the diaspora to unite in prayer at the Tomb of St. Peter in the Vatican. “Let our common prayer be a manifestation of communion with the Holy Father, the successor of the Apostle Peter, our gratitude for his pastoral care for the ‘suffering Ukrainian people’ and the voice of truth about Ukraine,” said the Head of the UGCC.

PLEASE PRAY FOR

Please include in your prayers those members of our parish who are in hospitals, care homes, rehabilitation facilities & those who are not able to join us actively in our church community.

“The oath of allegiance to Christ means defeating the enemy who seeks to take our lives” — His Beatitude Sviatoslav.

Today, every young Ukrainian and every Ukrainian woman must understand that in the face of this all-out war of Russia against Ukraine, the oath of allegiance to Christ means more than wisdom, knowledge, strength, and fortitude. It means victory over evil, our enemy who wants to take our lives. Today we want to feel that God’s power, the ability to win, vibrates in the body of our people and our Church. His Beatitude Sviatoslav, the Father and Head of the UGCC, said this in his sermon during the Divine Liturgy on the 90th anniversary of the Ukrainian Youth for Christ movement.  Within the UYC Congress in Lviv, the Primate greeted the youth and recalled how, 90 years ago, the righteous Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky united Ukrainian youth who had devoted their lives to Christ, defying the human ideologies of the time.  “At a time when various human ideologies — Nazism, communism, chauvinism, even extreme nationalism, etc. — demanded that a young person swear an oath to give his life for that ideology, and called for the death of those who were enticed by it, the righteous Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky gathered Ukrainian youth and showed them the only one to whom they should give their lives, devoting them to the Lord Jesus Christ, even to death. Our righteous metropolitan offered our youth to dedicate their lives not to some human ideology but to the Son of God,” the Hierarch emphasized.  Apart from that, His Beatitude Sviatoslav explained to the Ukrainian youth what it means to consecrate one’s life to Christ and take an oath of allegiance to Him. According to the Primate, every time we seek truth and justice in the world, we seek Jesus Christ; every time we want to be wise, we seek Jesus Christ; every time we try to be real people, we seek Jesus Christ, because it was He who combined in His Divine Person both the fullness of the deity and the fullness of the human being.  Congratulating the youth of UYC, the Archbishop wished that this Christian youth movement would touch the hearts of girls and boys in our Church throughout the world.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • Dormition of the Mother of God

The Byzantine Emperor Mauritius (582-602) established the Feast of the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Aug. 15 for the Eastern Church, which celebrated our Lady’s death and assumption.  By the end of the sixth century, the West likewise celebrated the feast under the title of “the Assumption.”  Whether we use “dormition” or “assumption,” the fundamental belief remains the same. The Catechism states, “The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin is a singular participation in her Son’s resurrection and an anticipation of the resurrection of other Christians: ‘In giving birth you kept your virginity; in your Dormition you did not leave the world, O Mother of God, but were joined to the source of Life. You conceived the living God and, by your prayers, will deliver our souls from death.”
