ANNOUNCEMENTS
- World Day of Consecrated Life is February 2nd
In 1997, Pope St. John Paul II initiated a Day of Prayer for vocations of women and men to the consecrated life. In both the East and West, Catholics on the Feast of the Presentation of Our Lord into the Temple bless candles. Our Lord Jesus Christ is the Light of the World. We Christians also are called to be “lights” to the world, to others. Those in consecrated life are called in a special way to reflect the Light of Christ.
- Three Holy Hierarchs Holy Day on Tuesday
The three Holy Hierarchs are pillars of the church. Living in and around the 300s, Sts. Basil, Gregory and John Chrysostom were great theologians during their age. And not only were they highly acclaimed during their time, but we continue to read their words and be inspired by their lives today. While each of these great men have their own feast days, we celebrate them together on January 30th. There was Basil, who admired the saint’s ability to clearly communicate the mysteries of our faith. Gregory was the closest to achieving theosis. Finally, John Chrysostom, who wrote with such eloquence that we are still using his Divine Liturgy today. One night, a bishop named John Mauropous had a dream where the three holy hierarchs appeared. The three holy hierarchs explained that they are all equal before God. The saints requested that they would be celebrated together on a single feast day. And that is how we came to have the feast of the 3 Holy Hierarchs. Divine Liturgy will be held at 9:00am on Tuesday.
- Sorokousty Information being Collected
We are now collecting information for the Lenten Sorokousty (Remembrance of the Beloved Dead) services. If you would like the souls of your Beloved prayed for during Lent as is customary, please fill out the Sorokousty envelope found in your envelope box and drop it in the collection basket. Fr. Myron will read all names during Lenten services. Lent begins February 12th.

Ukrainian President thanks Pope for Support
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently expressed his gratitude to Pope Francis for his Christmas greetings to Ukraine and for supporting the Peace Formula. This appreciation was conveyed during their latest phone conversation. “I have just spoken with His Holiness Pope Francis to express gratitude for his Christmas greetings to Ukraine and Ukrainians, for his wishes of peace – just peace for all of us,” said President Zelensky. “We discussed our joint work on the Peace Formula – more than 80 states are already involved at the level of their representatives. There will be more. I am grateful to the Vatican for supporting our work.” Pope Francis received the Ukrainian President in the Vatican on 13 May for their second in-person meeting. The first was in 2020, before Russia’s all-out invasion of its neighbor on 24 February 2022. Since then, the two men have spoken by phone several times, the first of which was on 26 February 2022, just two days after the outbreak of the war. Following that first phone conversation, President Zelensky said the Pope had expressed his deep sorrow for the tragic events that were unfolding in the European nation, while the President had thanked the Pope for his spiritual support for the people of Ukraine. They spoke again by phone on 22 March 2022. President Zelensky said he had told the Pope about the dire humanitarian situation and welcomed the Holy See’s offer to mediate in order to seek a solution to human suffering. Later, on 12 August 2022, the pair held another telephone conversation to discuss the horrors endured by the Ukrainian people due to Russia’s invasion, according to President Zelensky. He also expressed his appreciation to Pope Francis for his prayers and invited him to visit Kyiv.

ANNOUNCEMENTS
- New Priest ordained on Feast of St. Nicholas
On December 6, during the solemn hierarchical liturgy at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Philadelphia, metropolitan Borys Gudziak ordained a new priest. Father Mykola Dziurakh became the third priest ordained this year in the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia and the sixth who joined the ministry in the Archeparchy. Numerous priests of the Archeparchy came to share this joyful occasion. In attendance was Father Mykola’s uncle, bishop Bohdan Dziurakh, who serves as a Ukrainian Catholic bishop in Germany and Scandinavia, and whose supportive presence added an extra layer of significance to the event and the responsibilities Father Mykola was about to embrace. He presented Father Mykola with an icon of the Good Shepherd painted by his sister, who is a redemptorist nun in Ukraine. Father Mykola accepted his new ministry with humility and determination, surrounded by the support and love of his family and the Church community. In his brief address he thanked his family in Ukraine, bishops, priests, and fellow seminarians who supported his vocation, and especially his wife Uliana who accompanied him on his path to priesthood. In his homily metropolitan Borys emphasized that this joyous event took place on the feast of Saint Nicholas. “Feast of St Nicholas is a feast of giving, of generosity. And Saint Nicholas is generous with us. A new priest is a great gift. In the twenty first century a bishop cannot have a greater gift than to have an opportunity to share the grace of priesthood with a new priest”. Mykola Dziurakh was born in the village of Hirske, Lviv region, on November 16, 1996. From 2014 to 2020, he studied at the Kyiv Theological Seminary of the Three Holy Hierarchs. Currently, he is a student of the licentiate program in patristics and dogmatic theology at the Ukrainian Catholic University. He has experience in catechetical and missionary ministry in eastern Ukraine. With the blessing of His Beatitude Patriarch Sviatoslav, Mykola was ordained a deacon in Munich on June 12, 2022, by Bishop Bohdan (Dzyurach), Apostolic Exarch for Ukrainians of the Byzantine Rite in Germany and Scandinavian countries. He served as a deacon in Germany until February 2023. In February 2023, at the invitation of Metropolitan Borys Gudziak, with the blessing of His Beatitude Patriarch Sviatoslav, along with his wife Uliana Mykola began serving in the Ukrainian Catholic Archeparchy of Philadelphia.

- St. Nicholas Holy Day on Wednesday
The Feast of St. Nicholas is this Wednesday, December 6th. A Holy Day Divine Liturgy will be held at 9:00am. Come to Church on this special day to Honor this Holy Saint.
- Feast of St. Nicholas
St. Nicholas was born in the year 270. His parents were devout Christians. After their death, Nicholas distributed his inherited wealth with the poor. He defended the Christian faith. St. Nicholas even to this day is known for his personality trait of gift-giving. Shortly after his death, the faithful venerated the saintly Bishop. Churches were built in his honor and many parents named their sons “Nicholas.” In the Eastern Churches, almost every Thursday at the Divine Liturgy we read a Tropar and Kondak dedicated to St. Nicholas and all the Apostles. The icon of St. Nicholas is often found on the Iconostasis. There he is depicted as an Eastern Bishop, wearing an Omophor and Mitre. Many of our parishes have a program near his Feast Day during which St. Nicholas visits the children and greets them and distributes fruit, candy and small gifts, while those attending sing a special hymn in honor of St. Nicholas praising him for loving and serving us. We ask the saintly Nicholas to always help us in our time of need.
- Holy Day on Friday
The Conception by St. Anna of the Blessed Virgin Mary Holy Day is this Friday, December 8th. A special Divine Liturgy will take place at 9:00am. Please come to church on this Holy Day.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
- The Conception by St. Anna of the Blessed Virgin Mary
St. Joachim, having been publicly reproached in the temple, retired to the desert, and fasting forty days, he implored God for the blessing of a child. At the same time his wife, St. Anne, did the same at her home, saying: “O God of our Fathers, hear my prayer and bless me as You blessed the womb of Sarah, giving her a son, Isaac.” On the fortieth day, as Anne was praying in the garden, an Angel of the Lord appeared to her and said: “The Lord has heard your prayer and you shall conceive and bring forth a child, and your seed will be spoken of in all the world!” Anne replied: “As the Lord my God lives, if I beget a child, I will offer it as a gift to the Lord my God and it shall minister to Him in the holy place all the days of its life.” Just about the same time the Angel also appeared to Joachim in the desert and said: “Joachim, the Lord God has heard your prayer. Go home, therefore, for your wife Anne shall conceive.” As Joachim with his flock was returning home, Anne exclaimed: “Now I know that the Lord God has blessed us exceedingly!” On the following day they brought an offering of thanksgiving to God at the temple, saying: “Now we know that the Lord our God has been gracious unto us and has remitted all our sins.”

TONE 2 (p.333)
Troparion, Kontakion & Theotokion:
When You went down to death, O Life Immortal, You struck Hades dead with the blazing light of Your divinity. When You raised the dead from the nether world, all the powers of heaven cried out: “O Giver of life, Christ our God, glory to You!”
Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
You rose from the tomb, O almighty Savior; and Hades, seeing this wonder was stricken with fear and the dead arose. Creation saw and rejoiced with You and Adam exults. And the world, my Savior sings Your praises forever.
Now and forever and ever. Amen.
The tomb and death could not hold the Mother of God, unceasing in her intercession and unfailing hope of patronage, for As the Mother of Life she was transferred to life by Him Who had dwelt in her ever-virgin womb.
Prokeimenon:
The Lord is my strength and my song of praise, and He has become my salvation.
Verse: The Lord has indeed chastised me, but He has not delivered me to death.
Alleluia Verses:
The Lord will hear you in the day of tribulation; the name of the God of Jacob will shield you.
Lord, grant victory to the king, and hear us in the day that we shall call upon You.
Communion verse:
Praise the Lord from the heavens; praise him from the highest. Alleluia (3).
EPISTLE (Eph 6:10-17)
A reading from the Holy Apostle Paul to the Ephesians:
Brethren: Draw your strength from the Lord and from his mighty power. Put on the armor of God so that you may be able to stand firm against the tactics of the devil. For our struggle is not with flesh and blood but with the principalities, with the powers, with the world rulers of this present darkness, with the evil spirits in the heavens. Therefore, put on the armor of God, that you may be able to resist on the evil day and, having done everything, to hold your ground. So stand fast with your loins girded in truth, clothed with righteousness as a breastplate, and your feet shod in readiness for the gospel of peace. In all circumstances, hold faith as a shield, to quench all the flaming arrows of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.
GOSPEL (Lk 18:18-27)
An official asked him this question, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus answered him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone. You know the commandments, ‘You shall not commit adultery; you shall not kill; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness; honor your father and your mother.’” And he replied, “All of these I have observed from my youth.” When Jesus heard this he said to him, “There is still one thing left for you: sell all that you have and distribute it to the poor, and you will have a treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.” But when he heard this he became quite sad, for he was very rich. Jesus looked at him [now sad] and said, “How hard it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God! For it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” Those who heard this said, “Then who can be saved?” And he said, “What is impossible for human beings is possible for God.”

- Holodomor-Genocide Remembrance
The month of November for Ukrainians, Ukrainians in the heart and people of good will is a time of honoring the victims of the Holodomor, the terrible and planned by the Stalinist-Soviet regime famine of Ukrainians in Central, Eastern and Southern Ukraine in 1932-1933. The forced and prolonged famine of millions of Ukrainians has led to the deaths of at least 10.5 million people. Honor the memory of all those who perished by lighting a candle or sponsoring a Divine Liturgy in their honor.
